How I Cleared My Trauma Doing Breathwork
It doesn't have to be a crazy experience, trauma can affect any one of us.
As Ben Greenfield says, "it's the act of straying away from your true self." I've been experiencing a lot of that lately. Confusion, frustration, and anxiety wake me up in the morning. What I really want is to clear it and let go of the unnecessary pain.
One morning, a breathwork session helped me do just that.
I’m in Florida with my sister, we got here last night after traveling all day. No parents, no work, just good vibes. I went to bed feeling like it was gonna be a good trip, but I woke up with anxiety, thinking about past pains that still linger in my body.
At around 6, we decided to do our morning yoga to clear and relax our bodies. But I wanted to get these demonic thoughts out of my head. So around 6:45, we did a 30-minute breathwork session with Breathe with Sandy.
We did 5 rounds, inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth for about 30-50 reps each set, followed by a breath hold starting at 1 minute and going up to 2:30.
The thing about breathwork is it's hard as hell, especially the first couple rounds. Same with booze, the first shots are tough, then the next ones get easier. That's how it was going - the first two rounds were like a breath workout, but the breath holds were the most relaxing part.
I could feel my body tingling with each breath, and my mind was still holding on but wanting to release.
During the third set, Sandy picked up the pace, and on the last inhale, I brought all the energy to my head. No looking back now. It was time to clear it out. Sandy said one thing: "Don't take life so serious." I almost cried. What a beautiful image to look at - not taking life so serious.
The next 3 rounds were pure bliss, man.
Not only does breathwork deliver a bunch of physiological benefits like an improved immune system, higher tolerance to stress, and more oxygen in the blood, but it also has amazing psychological benefits like learning about your true self, returning to nature, and returning to yourself.
I think if we all did breathwork, we'd all be better people because we'd be more like our true selves.
Breathwork has helped me through life.
It helped me when I was an anxious college kid trying to fit into the world, and now as a 23-year-old man who wants to make the world a better place. It's gotten me closer to God and closer to myself, showing me love like nothing before and giving me the tools to show the world what love is all about.
I'll keep doing breathwork every single morning.
