6 Everyday Toxins You’re Still Living With (and How to Eliminate Them for Good)
Even biohackers aren’t immune. Here’s how hidden chemicals sneak into your daily life — and the smarter swaps to protect your body, boost your energy, and detox for fall.
I thought I had it figured out.
Clean diet, filtered water, sauna sessions, and of course, no plastic bottles!
And yet when I had my blood work done recently I was loaded with toxins.
High levels of arsenic and mercury. Mold toxins and high levels of a specific type of phthalate called (Mono-(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl phthalate, or MEOHP).
So much for biohacking….
But after diving deep into the world of environmental toxins I learned I was just skimming the surface when it came to invisible chemicals that do a lot to harm our hormones, our immune system, and our energy.
If I’m swimming in toxins with all the biohacks I’ve stacked, chances are, you are too.
So in this article we are going to break down the 6 everyday toxins we are exposed to and the ways to detox them from our bodies and our home.
Let’s jump right in y’all. After this we will be living our best toxin free lives!!!
1. Nonstick Pans (Microplastics & Heavy Metals)
Nonstick pans are convenient — eggs slide right off, cleanup is easy, and they’re in nearly every kitchen. But here’s the catch: if a pan has even a tiny crack, it can release hundreds of thousands of microplastic particles straight into your food.
And it doesn’t stop there. Many nonstick pans are coated with PFAS chemicals (a.k.a. forever chemicals) — which mimic estrogen in the body and throw your hormones into chaos.
They act like xenoestrogens, binding to estrogen receptors and disrupting the endocrine system.
So what looks like a simple kitchen tool ends up being a steady drip of microplastics, hormone disruptors, and metals — all building up in your system.
The Fix: Cook Smarter
Cast Iron Pans: The OG. Reliable, durable, and actually adds a little natural iron to your meals.
Our Place Pans: Non-toxic, modern cookware that performs like nonstick without the chemical baggage. Yes, they’re pricey, but they’re an investment in your health.
Stainless Steel / Wood Tools: Skip plastic utensils that melt and leach. Go stainless or wood.
Glass Storage: Don’t cook clean only to store leftovers in plastic Tupperware. Pyrex or Our Place containers keep your food toxin-free.
Detox Solution
Even if you’ve ditched the Teflon, past exposure lingers. Here’s how to support your system:
Binders: Activated charcoal or chlorella can help bind microplastics and metals.
Sweat Therapy: Sauna sessions are one of the most effective ways to mobilize and excrete heavy metals.
Mineral Repletion: Replace what toxins displace. Magnesium, zinc, and trace minerals support detox enzymes. Here is my favorite toxin-free electrolyte mix.
2. Artificial Fragrances (Detergents, Sprays, Perfumes)
Flip over most detergents and air fresheners and you’ll see the word “fragrance.”
Seems harmless, right? Wrong.
By law, that single word can hide hundreds of undisclosed chemicals.
Fragrances are a cocktail of phthalates (to make scents last longer), VOCs (volatile organic compounds that damage lungs), and other synthetic additives.
The result? Hormone disruption, asthma triggers, fertility issues, and neurological effects.
And remember, you’re not just “smelling” them.
You’re breathing them in, absorbing them through your skin, and circulating them in your bloodstream. Even your mitochondria — the little energy factories in your cells — take a hit.
Pets are hit even harder. Smaller bodies + faster metabolisms = more toxin burden.
The Fix: Detox Your Scents
Essential Oils: Organic oils in a diffuser = vibe without chemicals.
Natural Cologne/Perfume: My pick is Alitura Naturals Cologne — pure oils, no synthetics.
Air Freshener Alternatives: Fresh air beats fake air. Open windows, use a HEPA filter, or diffuse oils.
Laundry Swap: Eco-detergents or a DIY mix, or Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds.
Detox Solution
If you’ve been living in a Febreze cloud, don’t panic — but do give your detox pathways some love:
Glutathione: Your body’s master antioxidant, helps neutralize VOCs and phthalates. Try this liposomal formula.
Complete Liver Complex: Supports liver Phase I & II detox. NAC, NACET, Selenium, and Glycine. Phosphatidylcholine (PC) assists in methylation, and Calcium D-Glucarate (CDG) aids glucuronidation. Dihydromyricetin (DHM) is added to further promote liver regeneration and alleviate inflammation.
Air Quality: Run a HEPA filter consistently to reduce inhaled toxins.
Pro Tip: Check out Dr. Karen Becker’s work on pets and toxins — your dog or cat may be absorbing just as much (if not more) than you are.
3. Dryer Sheets & Toxic Laundry
Dryer sheets feel like magic — toss one in and your clothes come out soft, static-free, and smelling like “Mountain Breeze.”
But here’s the truth: they’re basically tiny chemical bombs wrapped in fabric.
That “fresh scent”? Usually a cocktail of phthalates (the same hormone disruptors we talked about in fragrances), quats(fabric softeners that irritate skin and lungs), and VOCs (air pollutants your body has to filter with every breath).
The real kicker: those chemicals don’t just evaporate. They cling to your clothes and rub into your skin all day long. And since skin is a sponge, not a barrier, you’re absorbing that chemical layer 24/7.
And don’t even get me started on laundry machines — dark, damp, and the perfect breeding ground for mold. If your clothes smell “musty” after a wash, that’s mold spores hitching a ride.
The Fix: Clean Up Your Laundry
Wool Dryer Balls: My go-to swap. Organic, reusable, static-fighting, and no chemicals.
Ozone Laundry Devices (Live O3): Add-ons that sanitize clothes, kill mold, and beat dryer sheets at their own game.
Detergent Upgrade: Ditch the “fresh scent” formulas. Go for unscented, eco-friendly brands like Branch Basics or simply use vinegar.
Fabric Upgrade: Polyester sheds microplastics into your clothes and the environment. Brands like Industry of All Nations use natural dyes and fibers that are safe for you and the planet.
Detox Solution
If you’ve been wrapped in chemical clothes for years, here’s how to lighten the load:
Sweat It Out: Skin exposure = skin detox. Sauna + hot yoga help purge what’s stored.
Support the Skin Barrier: Nutrients like vitamin E and omega-3s rebuild skin health after years of chemical irritation.
4. Conventional Produce (Mold & Pesticides)
We all know fruits and veggies are “healthy” — but here’s the dirty truth: much of today’s produce is drenched in pesticides, fungicides, and insecticides.
Add mold toxins from storage and transport, and what looks like a nourishing salad can actually be trashing your microbiome.
Your microbiome — the command center of digestion, detox, and immunity — gets hammered by these toxins. They block enzymes, disrupt hormones, and weaken your body’s ability to fight off pathogens.
The Fix: Eat Smarter, Not Dirtier
Organic First: Step one.
Regenerative Farms: Even better — they restore soil health and reduce chemical reliance. Look for glyphosate-free labels.
Farmers’ Markets: Ask the questions: “Do you spray? With what?” Most small farmers are proud to share.
Wash Properly: A rinse under the sink isn’t enough. Use vinegar, Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds solution, or ozone machines like Live O3.
Store Dry: Mold thrives in damp fridge drawers. Keep produce dry and fresh.
EWG: The ultimate database of of toxin free foods.
Detox Solution
Even with clean shopping, toxins sneak in. Here’s how to help your body fight back:
Liver Love: Sulfur-rich foods (broccoli sprouts, garlic) + NAC support Phase II detox.
Herbal Allies: Milk thistle and dandelion root help repair liver cells.
Advanced Biohacks: Ozone therapy can kill pathogens and boost detox pathways; EBOO (extracorporeal blood oxygenation & ozonation) literally filters toxins straight from your blood.
5. Tap Water (Metals, Microplastics & Pharmaceuticals)
Here’s a fun one: when I checked the Dallas County water report, it listed 26 chemicals above legal limits.
We’re talking arsenic, lead, pesticides, rocket fuel, and even trace amounts of birth control hormones.
And that’s just drinking water. When you shower in contaminated water, chemicals bypass digestion and absorb straight into your skin.
Add microplastics from old pipes, and you’re literally bathing in a chemical cocktail.
The Fix: Make Your Water Work for You
Real Filtration: Skip Brita. Invest in full-spectrum filters (Water & Wellness makes solid systems). Check out Ophora as well.
Shower Filters: A total game-changer. Protects your skin and lungs from chlorine, metals, and VOCs.
Remineralize: Filtered water loses minerals. Add toxin free sea salt or Kaizen electrolytes (sea moss, magnesium, taurine).
Structure It: Flow devices or spring water (Ophora, Mountain Valley) restore water’s natural state.
Detox Solution
Once metals and plastics are in your body, they’re stubborn. Here’s how to nudge them out:
Chelation Support: Cilantro, chlorella, and alpha-lipoic acid can bind metals.
Sweat & Hydrate: Sweating mobilizes toxins; clean water helps flush them out.
Creatine + Aminos: My personal hack — add creatine, aminos, and sea salt to morning water for better cellular uptake.
6. Skincare Products (Toxins Hiding in Your Bathroom)
At a biohacking conference, I tested five different skincare brands. Guess what?
Most were packed with phthalates, parabens, and chemicals I could barely pronounce.
Here’s the hard truth: your skin isn’t a barrier, it’s a sponge. Whatever you rub on it ends up in your bloodstream.
That “clean” moisturizer? It might as well be a hormone disruptor smoothie.
The Fix: Upgrade Your Skincare
Read Labels: If it looks like a chemistry textbook, skip it.
Go Natural: Oils, clays, botanicals. Your body recognizes these.
Brands I Trust: Alitura Naturals
Detox Solution
If you’ve been marinating in chemical lotions for years:
Skin Detox: Clay masks and Epsom salt baths help draw toxins out.
Support Glutathione: Liposomal glutathione or precursors (NAC, glycine) boost skin detox.
Nourish From Within: Omega-3s, collagen, and antioxidants heal and protect skin from the inside.
Final Word
Toxins sneak into our lives in ways we don’t even notice.
But awareness = power.
Swap out what you can, detox what you’ve already stored, and keep stacking small wins.
Cast iron instead of Teflon.
Essential oils instead of Febreze.
Filtered water instead of tap.
Wool dryer balls instead of chemical sheets.
You don’t need a perfect lifestyle or a closet of supplements. You just need consistent swaps that support your body instead of burdening it.
Clear the toxins, and you clear the path for real health.
Love you guys, have a great weekend!

I have made some of these changes in our lives but best to stay vigilant!
I would add dishwasher tabs to the list of toxins to remove from your home. These convenient cleaning tabs leave toxins on your everyday eating utensils and dishes as well as creating a 'fog' in the home when you run your dishwasher. This is something people don't think about but is so easy to change
