Dude what a story! You almost got lucky and got kefir, but instead you got a delirious hospital journey turned into a story that we can learn from. Love the quick reference at the bottom. Will implement 🫡
I pick up raw milk shortly after it’s been milked. It only lasts a week. I can’t imagine being able to get it online and what condition it’s in after shipping. I think it’s best to know your local source ( how competent and clean is the farmer’s set up?) and when it was milked.
Kim, this is so true. The place I bought it shipped it in dry ice, but a lot of the time it had already melted by the time it arrived, definitely a mistake on my end.
Where do you usually go to pick up your raw milk? Any good spots you recommend?
I live in eastern TN. In this state, to get raw milk you need to buy a herd share. One of the Congressmen here describes this as a loophole he wants to close. I wish he’d just work on something that needs fixing, but stories like your’s keep this alive. Anyway, here, you just look around for a farmer that has that available - kind of a word of mouth thing. But it’s super important to see the farm, know the farmer. I bought some raw goat’s milk without doing that and though I never got sick at all, by the time I made it out to see the farmer, I still have nightmares about what I discovered. Cleanliness is next to Godliness and this wasn't remotely close. It’s frustrating, because that goat’s milk was the best thing I’ve ever tasted and I’m not fond of goat cheese. There’s something about keeping the ram separated to get sweet tasting milk (?), but maybe that’s folk lore. But, it’s SO good, I have a feeling raising goats may be in my future. I can never go back :)
