The Surprising Power of Making Your Bed. DAILY
You know that feeling when you wake up, the world is still quiet, and you have the whole day ahead of you?
That's a moment full of potential.
But how you start it... makes all the difference.
I remember mornings when I'd wake up to a cluttered room, feeling instantly overwhelmed. Then, one day, I decided to change one small thing - I made my bed.
It might sound trivial, but that small act set a positive tone for my entire day.
It was like a switch flipped in my brain, telling me, 'Hey, you've already accomplished something!'
And that feeling?
It's addictive. It makes you say, 'That felt good, let's do another task.'
This is what I call the snowball effect of morning momentum.
Now, let me share with you the five transformative ways that simply making your bed can change your life:
Boosts Productivity
Reduces Anxiety
Enhances Creativity
Builds Discipline
Improves Aesthetics and Mood
1. Boosts Productivity:
Let's start with productivity.
When you make your bed, you're completing a task. This act may seem small, but according to psychological studies, it gives you a sense of accomplishment and sets you up to tackle more tasks throughout the day.
This phenomenon is known as 'task initiation,' a crucial step in building a productive routine.
It's like a domino effect; one completed task leads to another, and before you know it, you've had a remarkably productive day.
2. Reduces Anxiety:
Moving on to anxiety reduction, there's a clear link between our physical environment and mental health.
A study from the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin found that people with cleaner homes are healthier and less stressed. Making your bed can create a sense of order and a reduced feeling of chaos, which directly impacts your anxiety levels.
It’s about creating a sanctuary of calm in your own space.
3. Enhances Creativity:
Regarding creativity, a study from Princeton University Neuroscience Institute discovered that clutter can overwhelm the visual cortex, hindering our ability to focus and process information.
In a clean space, our minds are less distracted and more open to creative thinking.
By organizing your physical space, you're essentially decluttering your mind, making room for new, creative ideas to flow
4. Builds Discipline:
As for building discipline, it’s all about habit formation.
The famous book 'Atomic Habits' by James Clear discusses the power of small, consistent actions in creating significant life changes.
By making your bed every day, you’re training your brain to stick to a routine, developing a habit of discipline. This foundational habit can then pave the way for establishing other positive habits in your life.
5. Improves Aesthetics and Mood:
Finally, the aesthetic and mood improvement.
There's a concept in psychology known as 'affect heuristic,' where our emotional response to our surroundings influences our decision-making.
A well-made bed and a tidy room provide a visually pleasing environment, which can uplift your mood. This positive mood shift can lead to a more optimistic outlook on your day and overall life.
To wrap this up, I encourage you to try it for yourself.
Start simple: make your bed every day.
It doesn’t have to be an elaborate routine.
Gradually, extend this habit to different areas of your life - clean a room once a week, vacuum the floor, and do the dishes. Use cleaning as a tool to boost yourself, not just your environment.
Remember, in the end, it’s just you and your space. So, make that bed, clear that desk, and embrace the change.
You might just be surprised at how much it transforms your life.

This is so true. I cannot properly begin my day without making the bed. If I do nothing else do nothing else, the bed is made. During the lockdowns one of the health professionals was ridiculed for suggesting we should make our beds but it was one small thing in a crazy world we could control. I never thought it was a foolish idea. My husband on the other hand lives in a perpetual state of disorder… sigh!
Love this, and couldn't agree more. It's such a refreshing start to the day, and somehow, the small act makes me feel accomplished, clearly holding greater significance than simply a made bed. Thanks for sharing this post :)
